💍 How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer
Picking your wedding photographer isn’t easy. There are loads of us out there, and it can feel like everyone’s style looks a bit different. But here’s the thing: your photographer is with you most of the day, sometimes more than your guests, so finding the right fit really matters. I’ve photographed weddings all over Ayrshire and across Scotland, and one thing I’ve learned is that it’s not just about the photos. It’s about how you feel in them. Here are a few things I always tell couples when they ask for advice.
1. Go With Someone Whose Work Feels Like You
Scroll through a few galleries and see what kind of images make you stop and smile. Do you prefer big emotional moments, fun candid shots, or something more classic and posed?
If you love natural, relaxed images, ones that actually feel like your day, look for a photographer who shoots that way. The best photos come when you’re just being yourself, not worrying about where to stand or how to smile.
2. Get to Know Them
You spend a lot of time with your photographer, so personality really matters. You want someone who makes you feel comfortable, someone who’ll laugh with you, help calm any nerves, and blend into your day without turning it into a photoshoot.
I like to keep things light and easy going. Most of the time, couples tell me they forgot I was even taking photos, and that’s exactly how it should be.
3. Ask About Their Approach
Every photographer works differently. Some take charge and direct every shot; others hang back and let things unfold naturally.
There’s no right or wrong, but it helps to know what you’re getting so there are no surprises.
Ask questions like:
Tell us about yourself
Have you worked at our wedding venue before? If not, will you visit beforehand
How long will editing take
Do you have insurance
What is the backup plan if you are unable to attend on the day
If they care about your story, they’ll take the time to explain everything.
4. Trust Your Gut
When you find someone whose work you love and who feels easy to talk to, you’ve probably found the right one. Your wedding photos are about more than just the day; they’re about how you remember it years from now.
